Your construction projects are full of legacy-defining narratives that can help you win more bids, build trust and solidify your reputation.
A building is more than steel and concrete. It is a promise, a vision realized, a legacy in the making. Facts and figures may explain a project’s features, but they don’t create connection or demonstrate the impact your hard work has on the client, the workers, the community and the industry. People remember the dreams behind the design, the challenges that were overcome, and the lives that were transformed. Construction as an industry is filled with incredible human stories, and a well-crafted one ensures your impact is your legacy.
TITLE: Wrestling Gravity
Wrestling Gravity offers an intimate look at crane operator Martin Beauchamp, whose precision and focus keep the Aggie Square project moving seamlessly. Though perched high above the job site, Martin is deeply connected to the team below, ensuring that every lift and movement makes life easier for the workers on the ground.
This film was part of a Whiting-Turner series celebrating the people behind Aggie Square, spotlighting individuals who embody the company’s core value of teamwork. By highlighting the skill, dedication, and human connection within the project, the series played a key role in engaging and strengthening community perception by showcasing the real people behind this high-profile Sacramento development.

Neuroscience shows that people make decisions emotionally before justifying them logically, which is what makes story so powerful. We start by fully understanding your client’s vision, mission and impact and make that the foundation of the story. We then highlight your role in enabling the client to fully realize their goals through the completed project. Your commitment to your client’s success is lived out through values like quality, craftsmanship, teamwork, vision and going above and beyond. By combining our psychology-backed storytelling process with cinematic production, we craft films that educate, inspire, and leave a lasting impact.
Our films are designed to be a long-term, legacy-defining asset that reinforces your firm’s leadership and reputation in the marketplace.

About This Film
When our client pursued the $270M skilled nursing facility project at the California Veterans Home, they needed more than just numbers and plans—they needed a story that resonated.
We helped them highlight something no other bidder had: their deep commitment to veterans. Most of the subcontractors they selected for the project were veterans themselves; something no competing GC had intentionally prioritized or communicated.
While winning a project of this scale requires many factors, we are proud to have played a role in crafting a narrative that mattered…not just to decision-makers, but to the veterans this facility would serve.
About This Film
Woodworker Mike Nelson isn’t just building benches, he’s preserving the history of Aggie Square.
This film is the second in a two-part series exploring the landscape architecture and outdoor design that finish off the project. The benches Mike crafts aren’t made from ordinary lumber. They come from trees that once stood on the site, removed to make way for progress, but repurposed to remain part of the space.
Instead of discarding valuable materials, the landscape architect saw an opportunity—to transform the past into something both functional and beautiful. This thoughtful approach to sustainability and design ensures that Aggie Square’s outdoor spaces aren’t just well-planned, but deeply connected to the land they were built on.
Early in my career, I held press credentials to The Senate Press Gallery, The White House and the Governor’s Press Office in Sacramento, capturing news as a freelance photojournalist. I was documenting events like presidential inaugurations, State Of The Union addresses, hearings and more. That work led to an appointment from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as his Chief Photographer.
Through all that work, I discovered a love for authentic, documentary storytelling. For the last dozen years or so, my work has shifted from still photography to motion pictures and my passion for the craft has only deepened.
Throughout my professional life, I’ve worked in multiple industries in different capacities - from leading a team of 100+ team members in one of the fastest growing wireless companies in the country, traveling the Seven Seas working for a cruise line, guiding white water rafting trips in the Northwest, to many years as a pastor and chaplain - but the through line is people. I’m driven by hearing people’s stories and curious about what motivates people and discovering their uniqueness, which is why I love my role getting to find great stories in unexpected places and share them to offer others a fresh perspective on people, companies and their missions.
Filmmaking has been my passion since my teenage years, a love that led me to pursue a degree in Digital Film Production at Grand Canyon University. My journey has taken me across different aspects of filmmaking—from shooting and editing to directing and producing.
At Portlight, working on a diverse range of projects has sharpened my ability to create stories that speak. That passion for storytelling extended beyond my day-to-day work when I traveled last year to my home country of Ukraine for six weeks, documenting the lives of people navigating life in a war zone. That experience challenged my perspective on the role of a filmmaker in capturing truth and continues to shape my approach to documentary storytelling.
